Joie Sellers - a 12 year old victim of impaired driving in Brooklyn, New York

Joie Sellers
Joie Sellers, age 12, died on July 2, 2014, on a street in Brooklyn, New York City.

Just before 5:00 p.m. on that day in 2014, Joie was walking on the sidewalk in the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. She was in the company of her mother and her little sister, who was then 9 years old.

A van which had been stolen by Robert DeCarlo, then age 26, drove up onto the sidewalk and crashed into Joie and her family.

Tragically, Joie died at the scene. Her young sister underwent several operations including brain surgery and was in a coma for weeks. Their mother suffered pelvic fractures.

Robert DeCarlo fled the scene of the collision. He turned himself into the Police the following day.

He had been speeding at 50 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone when he lost control of the van. He was also high on drugs at the time. He had a lengthy prior criminal record.

Robert DeCarlo, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault. He was sentenced on May 16, 2016 to 5 to 15 years in prison.

Robert DeCarlo tearfully stated: "I'm so sorry for the pain I caused. I'll live with this the rest of my life. I have an addiction and will use my time to change. I hope you can
Robert DeCarlo
find it in your heart to forgive me."

Joie's grandmother graciously stated at Robert DeCarlo's sentencing: "Don’t say you’re sorry. Sorry won’t bring Joie back. You can change and become a productive member of society. Mr. DeCarlo, I want you to serve your 15 years and change for the better, don't be destructive to society."

Hindsight is 20-20. However we offer this advice to all drivers: If you find that you are drunk, wasted or doped up on street drugs or prescription drugs or if you are falling asleep on your feet, do NOT drive. Call a family member or a friend for a ride; or take a taxi or a bus; or stay where you are until you sober up; or crawl home on your hands and knees. It will be better for you and for the world if you do.

Regret can last a lifetime.

Joie was a sweet girl who was happy. She was kind in spirit. She loved ballet dancing and reading.

Joie's loved ones have suffered an unspeakable loss. Oceans of tears have been shed for this young girl who died so needlessly.

During the morning of August 12, 2015, a 28 year old unnamed woman was riding in the rear car of a New York City subway train.

It is unclear how many other passengers were in the car along with the woman.  However, after 11:00 a.m., a man started masturbating in front of the woman.

The subway train came to a stop in the Park Slope neighborhood in northwest Brooklyn, the doors opened and the woman ran out to the platform. The masturbating man followed and was attempting to rape the woman, right there in public.

Maurice Osborne, who was one car over, heard the woman screaming and stepped onto the platform.

He punched and headbutted the suspect, Alvaro Denica, age 40, and dragged him by the shirt two blocks to the local police precinct. The crying female victim followed Maurice to the police station and thanked him for helping her.

Maurice sustained a gash above his eye from fighting with the suspect.

aid of strangers in distress.
Alvaro Denica was booked on multiple charges including sexual assault and public lewdness.

Maurice said that he came to the woman's aid because: "When you see something like that you're supposed to help."

Maurice's mother is very proud of her son's actions. She stated that Maurice has always been a helpful person.

Maurice is currently living at a local shelter and is in training as a medical assistant. He is trying to get his own life on track.

Pray for Abby
Matt and his colleagues stepped up and arranged a ceremony.  Abby was given a white princess gown to slip over her clothes and Matt wore a Tuxedo T-Shirt. The staff at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer hummed the wedding march.  Abby was walked down the aisle by her mother and two nurses who acted as bridesmaids. There were rose petals scattered on the floor.

Then everyone had cake and a good time.

Abby said it was the "best day ever".

The driver of the vehicle had to have known he or she hit a pedestrian as there was a huge crash noise that neighbors heard and bits of the car flew off everywhere.

Family members stated that Joey had a big heart. He would give you his last dollar if
Father, place Joey on the stairway to

you needed it. He didn't have a car and walked just about everywhere.

Brian Mandell - a Good Samaritan in Scarsdale, New York

Brian Mandell, age 32, came to the aid of strangers on June 21, 2014, in Scarsdale, New York.
Brian Mandell

Other bystanders and the local Fire Rescue Department were also instrumental in saving two people from drowning.

Brian was bicycling along the Bronx River Parkway when he heard a loud crash.  A car had plunged into the waterway.  The Bronx River is not a raging river, but it is deep enough to drown you. It is also muddy and murky. You can't see what you're dealing with if a vehicle is underwater.

The Good Samaritan comes to the
aid of strangers, selflessly.
The car had landed upside down in the water.  The bystanders, including Brian, tried to break the vehicle's windows using rocks and sticks.  They were eventually able to pry the driver's side door open.

Brian, who could not see a thing, was able to pull the driver out of the car and to safety. A young woman was still trapped in the passenger seat.  Firefighters and bystanders including Brian were able with great difficulty to turn the car right side up.  The woman was saved.

Evan Ypsilanti, age 32, of Bronxville and Susan George, age 19, of Yonkers, were hospitalized after this near death experience. They will be forever grateful to Brian Mandell, the Firefighters and to the other bystanders who came to their rescue.

Brian says that he is no hero.  He is however, a Good Samaritan, who stepped up to the plate in an emergency and helped save lives.

God bless Brian.  God knows we need more men like him in this world.

David was a member of the Johnson City Police Department. He had 18 1/2 years of service.

After 7:00 a.m., Officer Smith and others responded to an emergency call regarding a disturbance at a Medical Clinic. A bomb threat may have been phoned in. A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene. James Clark

The suspect was then shot by another officer at the site.

He was an MRI Technician at the medical complex. He is described as a model employee with no prior serious police record. He did not appear to his colleagues to be mentally unstable before this date. There is no readily apparent motive for his attack of Officer Smith. It is believed that James Clark had a wife and a child or children.

Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police,
pray for David Smith
It is obvious that James Clark had some sort of complete and total mental breakdown. It is tragic that this breakdown involved the violent death of an innocent police officer.

The Johnson City Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. He was a good officer who will be greatly missed.

David Smith's family are devastated over his tragic and senseless death. He will be forever mourned.

Jordan was murdered around 6:00 a.m. He and his pregnant girlfriend, age 19, were both beaten, stabbed repeatedly, bound up in their basement and set on fire. The girlfriend broke a window and crawled out. She was saved.

Jordan was hugely popular. He was friendly, open and had a sense of humour. He liked BMX biking. He put family and friends first. He would give you the shirt off of his back. He was starting a new family. He was looking towards the future.

Loved ones stated that he stepped up and took responsibility for his life.

Nigel Saunders, age 25, and Julian R. Talamantez IV, age 21, have been charged with felony counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection with Jordan's death.

It is believed that this murder was undertaken during the course of a robbery. What do
Angels of God, pray for Jordan
most 22 year olds have that anyone would want to steal? Most have nothing that would warrant a violent murder.

Nigel Saunders had previously been a room-mate of Jordan Dordell. We hope this wasn't a nasty drug deal or a drug debt gone bad. There was a lot of rage involved in this murder and rage is often associated with "money owed".

Regardless of the motive, the death of Jordan is tragic.

Jordan is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his brother, Corey Dordell; his sisters Lacey Salano and Mandi Dordell; his fiancee, Rachael Marsh; and his "father figure" Mark Warner. Jordan was predeceased by his mother Beth Dordell.

Pray for all who are the victims of the Lost Ones, the Violent and the Merchants of Death. Amen.

Pray that Jordan is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
