He and his family members were attending an evening prayer service at a relative's house. Sometime in the later evening, they were leaving the house and crossing the residential street when they were struck by a black, 2013 Mercedes-Benz 350, with tinted windows.
Witnesses to the accident stated that the driver exited his vehicle, looked at the victims lying on the street, got back in his car and sped away despite the fact that people were screaming "Help us!".
Kyrillos was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital. His mother, Arini Thomas, and his sister, Gabriella Gendy, were hospitalized with minor injuries.
John Sanjurjo, age 33, turned himself in to Police the next day. He has been released from custody on $50,000. bail. He had pleaded not guilty.
Kyrillos Gendy’s funeral service was held on August 12, 2013, at St. Mina’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Holmdel, New Jersey.
Jesus, pray for Kyrillos |
The family of Kyrillos are sick with grief and are in shock over this horrible tragedy.
Loved ones remembered Kyrillos as a lively, fun-loving, happy little boy who loved Sunday school and Christmas. He was looking forward to enrolling in pre-kindergarten.
Kyrillos is survived by many loving friends and family members including his parents Reda and Arini, and his sister, Gabriella.
Pray for the children who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and gone the next. Amen.
God save us from the drivers who speed like a bat out of Hell, mowing down everything in their path. They are killing us, Father. Amen.
Pray that Kyrillos is playing in the fields of heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
