Charles Kondek - Law Enforcement - Tarpon Springs, Florida

Police Officer Charles Kondek, age 45, died in the line of duty on December 21, 2014, in Tarpon City, Florida.

Officer Charles Kondek (L); Marco Parilla Jr. (R)
Tarpon Springs is a city on the West coast of Florida, not far from Tampa. The population is approximately 24,000.

Charles was a member of the Tarpon Springs Police Department. He had 22 years of service in law enforcement - 17 years with the Tarpon Springs Department and 5 years with the New York City Police Department.

He was known as Charlie to many of his family members and friends.

At about 2:00 a.m., he had responded to a call about noise at an apartment complex. A man and woman were in a car and blasting their music.  The man was also knocking on apartment doors looking for someone who he thought had informed the authorities that he had violated his parole.

When Officer Kondek arrived at the complex he was fatally shot by the suspect and then run over by the suspect's vehicle as he fled the scene.

A short time later the suspect, Marco Parilla Jr., age 23, crashed into a utility pole and was apprehended by the Police. The suspect stated that he shot Officer Kondek because he felt he would have likely faced arrest and a return to prison.

Marco Parilla Jr. has been charged with first degree murder.
