The officers were participating in an anti-terrorism drill. At about 3:00 p.m., they were parked in their patrol car at an intersection, eating their lunches. Out of nowhere a man walked up to their vehicle and opened fire with a handgun. Both officers were struck in the head and upper body multiple times. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where tragically both men died.
The shooter was pursued by other officers to a nearby subway station where he shot himself dead.
The shooter was Ismaaiyl Brinsley, age 28 of Baltimore, Maryland. He had traveled to New York City with the express purpose of ambushing one or more police officers.
Supposedly this ambush was in retaliation for the July 17, 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York City and the August 9, 2014, shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Ismaaiyl Brinsley had shot and wounded his girlfriend, Shaneka Thompson, hours earlier that same day. He had a long history of criminal activity and arrests. His mother said that he was often violent and that she was afraid of him. He had tried to commit suicide last year and his mother stated that she believes he had undiagnosed serious mental health issues. She extends her sympathy and condolences to the families of the murdered officers.
The officers of the New York City Police Department are in mourning over the death of their brothers. Wenjian and Rafael will be forever remembered.
Wenjian's and Rafael's loved ones are devastated over their sudden and tragic deaths.
Rafael Ramos, of Brooklyn, had previously worked as a school security officer. His family stated that it was his dream to work for the New York Police Department. They
describe him as the best dad in the world. He was greatly loved. They have stated that the family has already forgiven the shooter.
Wenjian Liu had gotten married only two months ago. He is described as a quiet and kind man.
Both men will be forever mourned.
Rafael is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Margarita and his two sons.
