Lucas Chellew - Fatality - California Highway Patrol

Officer Lucas Chellew, age 31, died in the line of duty on February 22, 2017, at a hospital in Sacramento, California.

Officer Chellew was a member of the California Highway Patrol. He was assigned to the South Sacramento Area Office. He had 7 years of service. 

In the late afternoon, Lucas was on motorcycle patrol and was pursuing another motorcycle when he crashed near a city intersection in south Sacramento. 

Lucas was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. 

The man who was being pursued fled the scene. Alberto Quiroz, age 26, of Sacramento, was later arrested and charged with felony evading, felony vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony resisting arrest.

Lucas was a U.S. Army veteran with five years of service.  He then graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in May of 2009. Lucas' father is a retired California Highway Patrol Officer. Lucas' sister is currently a California Highway Patrol Officer.

The members of the California Highway Patrol are in mourning over the death of their brother. Lucas was a dedicated and professional officer. He will be forever remembered.

Lucas' loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Lucas is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, his sister, his wife and his two young children. 

Thank you for your service to America and to the community, Lucas. 

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye. 

Pray that Lucas is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
