Kenneth Steil - Police Officer Fatality - Detroit, Michigan

Sergeant Kenneth Steil, age 46, died in the line of duty on September 17, 2016, at a hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

Sergeant Steil was a member of the Detroit Police Department. He had been a member of the department’s Underwater Recovery Team before moving to the 9th Precinct. He had 20 years of service. 

On September 12, 2016, after 11:00 p.m., Ken was one of the officers in pursuit of a man wanted for carjacking and for wounding his own father and another man. 

The male suspect fled on foot. 

Ken pursued the suspect. The fleeing man fired a sawed-off shotgun at the officer, striking Ken in the shoulder. 

Other officers on the scene arrested the suspect, Marquise Cromer, age 21. It has been reported, but not confirmed, that this man is schizophrenic. He is facing numerous charges.

home. Tragically, he suffered a medical emergency and passed away. 

The Detroit Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. Police Officials describe Ken as an American Hero. He was a professional and devoted officer who stepped up in times of danger. He will be forever remembered.

Ken's loved ones are devastated over his tragic death. He loved his family and he was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Ken is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and two young sons.
