Deputy Maness was a member of the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. He had 8 years of service.
Almost a year ago, on October 16, 2014, Dwight and two other deputies had responded to a request for a welfare check at a house in the village of Holiday Hills.
Scott Peters, then age 52, opened fire on the deputies and kept firing as the deputies fled for cover.
Dwight Maness was shot in the back and in the leg. The other deputy was also shot in the leg.
Dwight was pulled to safety and rushed to a nearby hospital.
The shooter, Scott Peters, was arrested soon after. He has been convicted of attemped murder and has been sentenced to 135 years in prison.
Dwight was confined to a wheelchair and underwent numerous painful surgeries to

On September 14, 2015, while undergoing a rehab session in a swimming pool, Dwight tragically died of a blot clot in his lungs.
Dwight was a U.S. Army Veteran.

The McHenry Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Dwight was a well-loved and well-respected deputy. He was a conscientious and dedicated officer. He will be forever remembered.
Dwight's loved ones are devastated over his unexpected and tragic death. He kept up an optimistic stance throughout this ordeal. He was looking forward to his recovery and to returning to work. He will be forever mourned.
Dwight is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife.
