Ladson O'Connor - Law Enforcement Fatality - Georgia

Sheriff Ladson O'Connor died in the line of duty on June 16, 2015, near the Toombs County/Montgomery County Line, Georgia.

Sheriff O'Connor was a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office based at Mt. Vernon, Georgia.

At about 1:00 a.m., deputies in Toombs County tried to stop a vehicle whose occupants were acting suspiciously. The vehicle fled and the occupants fired shots at the pursuing officers. Sheriff O'Connor joined the pursuit near the county line. During the chase, his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries.

Tragically Sheriff O'Connor died at the scene of the accident.

Edward Lowery, age 35, and Nicole (Dixie) Best, age 36, the occupants of the fleeing vehicle, were later apprehended separately. Edward Lowery is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer and one count of Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer. Other charges may be pending.

Ladson was in his first term as sheriff. He had been sworn in, in January of 2013.

Friends describe him as a man who you could depend upon. He was a man of his word. He was honest and hardworking. He was caring and helpful.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Ladson will be forever remembered.

Ladson's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Ladson is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and four children.

Thank you for your service to the community, Ladson.
