Deputy Sheriff Christopher Smith, age 47, died in the line of duty on November 22, 2014, at a house in Tallahassee, Florida.
Chris Smith

Deputy Smith was a member of the Leon County Sheriff's Office.  He had almost 6 years of service with the department.

Deputy Smith and Deputy Colin Wulfekuhl had responded at about 10:22 a.m. to reports of a house fire at a Tallahassee residence. Deputy Smith was approached from behind by a male who shot and killed him without warning.

The shooter, Curtis Wade Holley, age 53, then took Chris' firearm and started shooting at other responders including city police officers and firefighters.

Deputy Colin Wulfekuhl was also shot and wounded.

Curtis Holley was shot and killed after an estimated 12 or 13 minutes of gunfire between him and law enforcement officers. He was known to local authorities as being anti-government and anti-police.  It is speculated that he set his own house on fire hoping to kill as many law enforcement officers as he could.

Chris had previously served as a dispatcher and as a corrections officer.

Chris' funeral will be held at the Bradfordville First Baptist Church in Tallahassee.
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police,
pray for Chris and for those who have lost him.
