John Collum - Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks - Mississippi

John Collum
Master Sergeant John Collum, age 56, died in the line of duty on May 9, 2014, near Fulton, Mississippi.

John was a member of the Mississippi Department of Wildlilfe, Fisheries and Parks. He had 15 years of service.

A neighbor of John had called him to report a prowler. John responded to the call and at 10:00 p.m., he was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway. The collision seems to have nothing to do with the prowler situation.

The driver of the vehicle, Cody Weaver, age 19, of Fulton, Mississippi, remained at the scene and was taken into custody by Itawamba County deputies. It is reported that he was travelling at about 75 miles per hour when he struck Officer Collum. Cody's vehicle skidded for almost 300 feet before stopping.

Cody Weaver is being charged with negligent homicide. Three juveniles were also in the car with Cody but they will not be charged for any offences.  They weren't driving and they are under-age.  But no doubt they egged Cody on in this speeding scenario.

John Collum was named the Southeast Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies’
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of Law Enforcement,
pray for John and for those who have lost him
Officer of the Year in 2012. This is a prestigious honor.

Wildlife Department colleagues are in mourning over the death of their brother.

John is described as well respected, a good friend and a good officer.

John's family are devastated by his sudden and senseless death. He will be forever mourned.

John is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, his two sons and four grandchildren.

Thank you for your service to the public, John.

Pray for all who die suddenly. They are with us one moment and gone before we can say goodbye.

God save us from the speeding drivers, the drunk drivers and the doped up drivers. They are killing us, Father.

Pray that John is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
