Cali Leclair - 14 month old girl is mauled by a Pit Bull in Ottawa, Canada

Cali Leclair
Cali Leclair, age 14 months, was attacked and mauled on April 27, 2014, at her home in Ottawa, Ontario.

The child is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital. It has been reported that part of the child's nose was bitten off. This is unconfirmed as of this posting.

The child's mother owns two large dogs of her own and decided to take in a pit bull who had a history of biting. She was attempting to rehabilitate the animal.

Cali went to pet the pit bull. It snapped its jaws onto the child's face. The mother tried
a pit bull
to dislodge the dog but couldn't. The child's father had to pry the dog's jaws off of the child's face.

The dog had bitten the baby of its previous owner, before this instance. The dog will be put down.

In Ontario, it’s illegal to own, import or breed an American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier or any similar breed. Under terms of the ban, which took effect in August 2005, people who already owned pit bulls were allowed to keep their animals, but had to ensure they were neutered or spayed. The dogs are supposed to be muzzled and leashed in public.

Pit bulls and related breeds that were around in 2005 in Ontario would be coming up to 9 years old and should be dying out soon if the law was being enforced. There should be no pit bull puppies in Ontario according to this law. However, pit bull owners flaunt the law outright, don't register these dogs or register them as a different dog breed entirely.

A group of local pitbull owners and supporters are planning a march in downtown
Pray for Cali
Ottawa on May 3, 2014. They will march in support of dogs that maul and kill children and adults.

Pit bulls are vicious and unpredictable. They were bred 200 years ago for bull baiting, bear baiting and dog fighting. They were never intended to be family pets. They have proven that they can kill people, both young and old. Many towns, cities and states do not allow pit bulls and related breeds within their jurisdictions.

Mauling by a dog is not acceptable in a civilized country.

Pray for the recovery of Cali Leclair.
