Greg Barnas - Firefighter - New Jersey

Firefighter Greg Barnas, age 57, died in the line of duty on February 28, 2014, in Wallington, New Jersey.

Greg was a Captain for the Jersey City Fire Department. He had 29 years of service. Greg was also a volunteer firefighter for the Wallington Fire Department.

Many of his buddies called him Barney.

Wallington is Greg's hometown.

Greg was fighting a fire at a burning restaurant in Wallington in the early morning hours. The fire started from an electrical fixture in the kitchen. Greg was cutting a hole in the roof when he fell. He was rushed to the Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

Greg's sons, John and Kevin, were also fighting the same fire at the time of the accident.

Jersey City fire department officials stated that Greg was committed to his work and dedicated to his profession. He put the public's interests in front of his personal interests. He was well-respected by his peers.

Others stated that he loved his family and the fire service.

Greg had served as a volunteer with the Wallington Fire Department since 1972.

His family will forever miss him.

Greg is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Patricia; and his sons, John and Kevin.

Thank you for your service to the public, Greg.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and gone the next.

Pray that Greg is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
