Jeff Campion - Firefighter - New York State

Firefighter Jeff Campion, age 52, died on January 17, 2014, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, in Yonkers, New York.

In some news reports, his name is spelled "Jef".

Jeff was a firefighter with the Yonkers Fire Department. He was stationed with Engine Co. No. 3. He had over 22 years of service.

Jeff committed suicide by hanging.

Jeff graduated from Yonkers High School and joined the fire department in the mid-1980's.

He spent about 40 consecutive days at Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. He was subjected to a lot of distress, pain and torment there. For many first responders and aiders, the destruction and death was overwhelming.

Saint Florian, Patron Saint of
Firefighters, pray for Jeff

Jeff was a big supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project.

He was named Firefighter of the Year for 2012 by his union.

During his career he had delivered a baby on the job and had saved the lives of several people. Jeff had not worked as a firefighter for the past 6 months.

Jeff was known for doing anti-war art displays and for his volunteer work with children's charities. He was a crusader for world peace and an advocate for kids’ safety, and those causes were evident in his work that he exhibited on buildings, utility poles and in galleries.

His graffiti work often got him into hot water. He had painted Walt Disney characters on the hospital walls of a local pediatric unit.

He volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City for 20 years and dedicated many hours of his life to helping kids.

Jeff is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his father, Fred; his sisters, Dawn and Kendal; and his brothers, Fred and Christopher.

Thank you for your service to the public, Jeff.

People commit suicide for a reason. Pray for all who struggle and who are tormented. Amen.

Pray that Jeff is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
