Shawn P. T. Charles

Capt. Shawn P. T. Charles, age 40, of Hickory, North Carolina, died on October 23, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas, from a non-combat related terminal illness. 

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

He entered active-duty service in January of 2009 and was deployed to Iraq in August of 2011.

Charles' awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" device, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
