Police Officer Eric Fontes was killed in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 13, 2011, in the line of duty.
Eric was a member of the Honolulu Police Department. Eric was originally from Molokai and graduated from the Police Academy in 2005.
Eric was struck and killed by an automobile while conducting a traffic stop. The vehicle was stopped along the median in the left hand lane. During the stop three units responded to assist at the scene. Another car entered the scene and struck one of the patrol cars, Officer Fontes, and a second officer.
Officer Fontes succumbed to injuries while being transported to a local hospital. The other injured officer was transported in critical condition.
The 20 year old driver who struck Officer Fontes was arrested and charged with negligent homicide and other charges.
Fellow officers have stated that Eric Fontes was a great guy, a great and likable cop, and a man of faith. They say he was a family man and always made people laugh. He was also a positive person and encouraged the people he worked with.
Eric is survived by numerous loving friends and family members, including his wife, Liane.
Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
