Jacob Sims - U.S. Army Fatality - Afghanistan

Jacob Sims
Chief Warrant Officer Jacob M. Sims, age 36, of Juneau, Alaska, died in the line of duty on October 27, 2017, in Logar Province, Afghanistan.

Chief Warrant Officer Sims was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He was a helicopter pilot.

On October 27, 2017, Jacob was involved in a helicopter crash not caused by enemy action. Tragically, he died of his injuries. 

A number of other crew members were injured. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Jacob grew up in Skagway, Alaska. He served out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina and later out of Fort Wainright, Alaska as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. He was then assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

Jacob had 18 years of service. He served tours of duty in Kosovo, Iraq as well as Afghanistan.

Jacob received numerous awards and decorations during his years of service including the Air Medal (with Combat Device), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Unit Citation (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters) Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (with 1 Bronze Campaign Star), Iraqi Campaign Medal (with 2 Bronze Campaign Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (2nd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (3rd Award), Air Assault Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Sapper Tab, Basic Aviator Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.

mourning over the death of their brother. Jacob died in the service of his country. He will be forever remembered.

Jacob's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loved. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Jacob is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, his wife and children.

Pray for all who die suddenly. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.
