Steven Floyd - Corrections Officer Fatality - Smyrna, Delaware

Sergeant Steven Floyd, age 47, died in the line of duty on or before February 2, 2017, at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, Delaware.

Sergeant Floyd was a member of the Delaware Department of Corrections. He had 16 years of service.

After 10:00 a.m., on February 1, 2017, a riot broke out in one building of the correctional center. A lengthy hostage situation ensued in which Steven and three other prison employees were taken prisoner by the inmates.

At about 5:00 a.m. on February 2, 2017, a tactical response team stormed the building and, tragically, found Steven deceased.

The other prison employees were rescued. They did not sustain life-threatening injuries.  

Over 100 inmates involved in the riot remain in custody pending an investigation. All are suspects in Steven's death.

Friends describe Steven as a loving husband, father and an adoring grandfather.

The members of the Delaware Department of Corrections are in mourning over the death of their brother. Steven was a professional who was well liked and well respected by his comrades. He will be forever remembered. 

Steven's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loving and he was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Steven is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife.

God save us from the psychopaths. They are killing us, Father. Amen.

Pray that Steven is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
