Douglas Riney and Michael Sauro - Victims of War in Afghanistan

Sgt. Douglas J. Riney, age 26, of Fairview, Illinois, and Michael G. Sauro, age 40, of McAlester, Oklahoma, died on October 20, 2016, in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The men were visiting an ammunition supply point outside Kabul when they were attacked by a lone gunman who opened fire on them. Both men were fatally wounded. Their assailant was killed. 

Another U.S. service member and two civilians were wounded in the same attack. Their wounds were not life-threatening. 

Sgt. Riney was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He entered active-duty service in July of 2012 as a petroleum supply specialist. He had been assigned to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment since December of 2012. This was his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. 

Sgt. Riney's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, and the NATO Medal.

The soldiers of Fort Hood are in mourning over the death of their brother, Douglas Riney. Doug was one of the good guys. He will be forever remembered.

Douglas' loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Douglas is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his young son and daughter. 

Michael Sauro was a civilian assigned to the Defense Ammunition Center, McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, McAlester, Oklahoma. This was his third overseas deployment. 

Friends of Michael Sauro describe him as upbeat, helpful and always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed aid. 

Michael is survived by many loving friends and family members who will forever miss him.
