The cause of death was a non-combat related injury. The incident is under investigation.
Staff Sgt. Wilbur was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, in Fort Carson, Colorado.
Chris was a member of the U.S. military operation which targets terrorist activity in Afghanistan. He was part of a mortar crew.
He graduated from Granite City High School and joined the army in June of 2005. He had been stationed at Fort Carson since September of 2015.
He deployed to Afghanistan in February of 2016. He had previously served two tours of duty in Iraq and a previous tour in Afghanistan. This was his fourth overseas deployment.
Chris had received many awards during his Army career including two Achievement medals, four Good Conduct medals and four Commendation medals.
Family members stated that Chris was athletic and enjoyed rock climbing and
snowboarding. He loved the military.

The soldiers of Fort Carson are in mourning over the death of their brother. Chris will be forever remembered.
Chris' loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He always had a smile on his face. He loved his wife and children. He did his best to provide for his family. He will be forever mourned.
Chris is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including but not limited to his father, Richard Wilbur; his stepmother, Phyllis Wilbur; his sister; his wife, Lindsey and two young children.
