Greg Barney - Police Officer Fatality - Georgia

Major Greg Barney died in the line of duty, on February 11, 2016, at a hospital in Riverdale, Georgia.

Major Barney was a member of the Riverdale Police Department. He had 25 years of service.

Greg Barney was known as "Lem" to many of his family members and friends.

Just after 11:00 a.m., Greg was assisting members of the Clayton County Police Department serve a drug warrant at an apartment complex in Riverdale. Greg was assigned to a perimeter position. 

The male subject ran out of the apartment complex and encountered Greg whom he shot at least twice. The subject continued to flee but was shot by another officer a short distance away.

Greg was rushed to a nearby hospital where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in Atlanta, in critical condition. His name is not available as of this posting.

Greg was a U.S. Navy veteran. 

The Riverdale Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. He was a true professional. He was especially interested in helping kids stay out of trouble. He will be forever remembered.

Greg's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Greg is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and children.
