Douglas Barney - Police Officer Fatality - Utah

Douglas Barney
Police Officer Doug Barney, age 45, died in the line of duty on January 17, 2016.

He was mortally wounded after responding to an accident near an intersection in Holladay.

Holladay is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah and is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was just over 26,0000 at the 2010 census.

Officer Barney was a member of the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake. He was stationed at the Holladay Precinct. He had 18 years of service in Law Enforcement.

Doug observed a man and a woman who were involved in the accident walking away from the scene. As he attempted to contract the pair the male subject (Cory Lee Henderson, age 31) opened fire shooting Officer Barney in the head.

Officer Barney was rushed to a local hospital where tragically he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Michael, Patron Saint of the
Police, pray for Doug and for
those who have lost him.
Others officers shot the male suspect dead. He was a well known criminal with outstanding federal and state warrants. The female fled the scene and is on the loose.

If you have any information about this crime or the whereabouts of the woman involved please called the Non-Emergency Line at: 801.743.7000.

Doug had survived bladder cancer during a 12 year battle with the disease and had also worked as a school resource officer for Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville.

Friends stated that Doug was known and was loved by many. The students he worked with are in shock over his untimely death. He worked part time as a security guard at a local TV station.

The members of the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake are in mourning over the death of their brother. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and had a witty sense of humor. He was always trying to cheer other people up. He was always there for his comrades in times of trouble. He will be forever remembered.

Doug's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was a loving husband and father and was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Doug is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his three children.

Thank you for your service to the community, Doug.

Pray for justice for Doug.

God save us from the Lost Ones who bring death to strangers. Amen.

Pray that Doug is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
