Garrett Swasey - Police Officer Fatality - Colorado Springs, Colorado

Police Officer Garrett Swasey, age 44, died in the line of duty on November 27, 2015, at a hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Officer Swasey was a member of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs Police Department. He had six years of service. 

Just before noon, Garrett was on duty at the University when he was called to respond to a shooting at a Planned Parenthood Medical Clinic several miles away. 

An armed man had entered the clinic and opened fire on employees and patients.  He then barricaded himself inside. 

Garret was fatally shot at the scene. Two civilians were also killed. Many others were wounded. 

Garret was rushed to a nearby hospital where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. 

The names of the civilians killed have not been released as of this posting. 

The shooter, Robert Lewis Dear, age 57, of North Carolina, was taken into custody after a five hour standoff. 

Garrett had been part of an ice-skating duo who won the junior national ice-skating championship in 1992. 

Garrett was a co-pastor at the non-denominational evangelical Hope Chapel, in Colorado Springs. He was deeply committed to his faith. 

A fundraising site has been set up to help the family with expenses and to set up an education fund for the children.

Garrett's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was a devoted husband and father. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Garrett is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Rachel, and their two young children, Elijah and Faith.
