Steven Sandberg - Sheriff's Office Deputy killed in Minnesota

Deputy Steven Sandberg, age 60, died in the line of duty on October 18, 2015, at a hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. 

Deputy Sandberg was a member of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office. He had 24 years of service. 

Deputies had taken Danny Hammond, age 50, of Aitkin County, into custody regarding a warrant for kidnapping, assault, terroristic threats and other violent offenses.  He had a lengthy criminal record. 

He had some sort of medical issue and was taken to a hospital in St. Cloud.  The hospital had requested the Sheriff's Office to place a guard in the room with the man. 

At about 5:15 a.m., Danny Hammond attacked Steven Sandberg and disarmed him. Danny Hammond then shot Steven Sandberg. 

Tragically, Deputy Sandberg died of his injuries.

Hammond died a short time later from a heart attack.

Steve was thinking of retiring next year. He was a member of Aitkin United Methodist Church. 

The Aitken County Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Steve will be forever remembered.

Friends stated that Steve was a good husband, father, neighbor and Deputy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

Steve's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Steve is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his daughter.

God save us from the psychopaths. They are killing us, Father. Amen.

Pray that Steve is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
