Scott Lunger |
Sergeant Lunger was a member of the Hayward Police Department. He had 15 years of service.
Hayward is a city located in Alameda County with a 2014 population of almost 150,000.
Just after 3 a.m., Scott had observed a male driving a truck erratically and was conducting a traffic stop near a city intersection. As he approached the truck the male driver opened fire striking Scott.
Another officer on the scene opened fire at the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle was found abandoned a short time later. The driver was wounded and was taken into custody.
Scott was rushed to a nearby medical center where, tragically, he was pronounced deceased.
Mark Anthony Estrada, age 21, of Oakland, California, is the suspect. He has no prior
criminal convictions but may be involved with a gang.
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police, pray for Scott and for those who have lost him. |
The Hayward Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. Scott is described as a leader in the department. He was a great friend and an ideal police officer who was well-respected by his peers. He was a kind man who had strength of character. He will be forever remembered.
Friends describe Scott as laid back, helpful and giving.
Scott played baseball with the Tri-Valley A's, a team for men 45 years of age and older. He also coached a girl's softball team at Freedom High School in Oakley, California.
Scott's loved ones are devastated over his tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.
Scott is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.
Thank you for your service to the community, Scott.
Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
God save us from the Lost Ones who bring death to strangers. Amen.
Pray that Scott is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
