Lida was going home from work.  At about 6:45 p.m., she was standing on the sidewalk of a street in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of northwest Chicago.

Maciej Machniewicz, age 45, was driving his vehicle which hit a second vehicle which then crashed into a third vehicle. His car also struck a traffic box, a light pole, the pedestrian - Lida Xhelo, and then a fence before it came to a stop.

Lida was rushed to a hospital where tragically she was pronounced deceased. She had suffered multiple injuries.

It is believed that Maciej Machniewicz was driving while impaired from alcohol. He is facing numerous charges including driving without a license.

Advice To All Drivers: If you find that you are wasted, drunk or doped up on street drugs or prescription drugs or if you are falling asleep on your feet, do NOT drive. Call a family member or a friend for a ride; or take a taxi; or stay where you are until you sober up; or crawl home on your hands and knees. It will be better for you and for the world if you do.

Regret can last a lifetime.

Lida had emigrated from Albania last year to be near her daughter's family who live in Chicago. She was working as a caregiver.

Lida's loved ones are devastated over her sudden and tragic death. She is described as a hard-working woman who loved her family.  She was a best buddy to her 9 year old grandson. She was trying to improve her English. She will be forever mourned.

The family intends to have Lida buried in her homeland, Albania.
Pray for Lida

Lida is survived by many loving friends and family members including her daughter, her son-in-law and her grandson.

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.

God save us from the drunk and the doped up drivers. They are killing us, Father.

Pray that Lida is in heaven. Pray that she is at peace and is with God. Amen.
