Sgt. Johnson and Trooper Rich were both members of the Alaska State Troopers. Both men were members of the Fairbanks Rural Service Unit.
Patrick Scott Johnson went by the name Scott. Gabriel Rich went by the name Gabe.
The troopers received reports that a man had been brandishing a firearm in the village of Tanana several days earlier.
Tanana is a village of 238 residents, located on the Tanana River, about 130 miles west of Fairbanks. Residents there are Natives who largely survive by hunting and fishing. Access to the village is by small airplane only.
About 3:00 p.m., the Troopers had gone to a home in Tanana to speak to the suspect. During a confrontation inside the home, both officers were fatally shot.
Nathanial Lee Kangas, age 19, of Tanana, has been arrested for the murders of the Troopers.
The Troopers were well known in the Village and had good reputations. If there was
trouble, they could be relied upon to show up in a few hours to help out.
The Alaska State Troopers are in mourning over the deaths of their brothers. They will be forever remembered.
The families of Scott Johnson and Gabriel Rich are devastated over the deaths of their loved ones in this tragic and senseless way.
Scott Johnson is survived by many loving comrades, friends and relatives including his parents and siblings; his wife and three daughters.
Gabe Rich is survived by many loving comrades, friends and relatives including his parents; his fiancée and two sons.
Thank you for your service to Alaska, Scott and Gabe.
