Volgograd is a city in the south of Russia. It has a population of over 1 million.  Formerly, it was called "Stalingrad".  It is 400 miles from Sochi, which is the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

At about 12:45 a.m., a woman, believed to be a Chechen, tried to enter the railway station.  She got to the metal detectors at the entrance.  Witnesses said that Officer Dmitry Makovkin noticed that the woman was acting suspiciously. She hesitated at the turnstile.  Dmitry approached her and she suddenly tried to rush inside. Dmitry tackled her and she ignited the explosive device.
