Rafsan Alam - a hit and run victim in Scarborough, Ontario

Rafsan Alam, age 22, died on October 20, 2013, on a street in Scarborough, Ontario.

He had been playing cards with friends and relatives. At about 1:00 a.m., he left the gathering and headed off to a local coffee shop to get some pastries. His sister was due to fly in from out of town and he wanted to get her some treats.

Rafsan was crossing the street when he was struck by a truck. The driver fled the scene.

The driver of the truck was allegedly involved in the armed robbery of a cab driver prior to the collision with Rafsan.

Anthony Sowkey, age 24, of Toronto, has been arrested and faces charges including armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving causing death, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and driving while disqualified.

Rafsan was in his final year at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, studying for a bachelor of business administration. He had ambitions to study in New Zealand.

Family members described Rafsan as their crown jewel, forever loved and forever missed.

Friends describe him as one of the nicest people they've met. He was humble. He was into fitness.

This family has suffered huge losses. Rafsan's older brother had drowned at age 3, while the family was living in Bangladesh.

Rafsan is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother Kamrun; his father, Kaisar; and two siblings.

Pray for justice for Rafsan.

God save us from the thieves. They are killing us. Amen.

Pray that Rafsan is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
