William Brown III - U.S. Military

Sgt. William D. Brown III, age 44, of Franklin, North Carolina, died on September 19, 2013, in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, from a non-combat incident. The soldier's death is under investigation.

William was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Polk, Louisiana.

William was a health-care specialist who enlisted in the Army in May of 2010. 

After completing basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

He then transferred to Fort Polk and arrived at the west-central Louisiana Army post in December.

He deployed to Afghanistan in July of 2012.

William's decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Medal, the NATO Medal and the Certificate of Achievement. 

His other achievements included completing the Brigade Combat Team Trauma Course, the Warrior Leadership Course and the Combat Lifesavers Course.

William is survived by many loving friends and relatives.
