Matthew McKnight - Firefighter - Los Angeles

Fire Captain/Paramedic Matthew McKnight, age 51, died in the line of duty on August 12, 2013, at the Los Angeles Fire Department Metropolitan Fire Communications Center.

Matthew was a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department. He had 31 years of service.

Matthew was found unresponsive while on duty at 1:07 a.m. Colleagues performed CPR, applied a defibrillator and instituted advanced life support measures. Sadly, Captain McKnight was pronounced deceased at a nearby medical center a short time later.

It is believed that he suffered a heart attack. He was supervising 11 dispatchers at the time of his death.

The Fire Department is in mourning over his passing.

He was known for his warm smile and firm handshake. He is also described as caring, competent, knowledgeable, positive and happy.

Matthew is survived by many loving friends and relatives including two brothers, who are both members of the Los Angeles Fire Department; his wife and their son and daughter.
