Mickey Yates - Firefighter - Mississippi

Fire Chief Mickey Yates, age 47, of Decatur, Mississippi, died in the line of duty on July 6, 2013, on a highway in Newton County, Mississippi.

Mickey Yates was a member of the Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department. He was Fire Chief for 23 years.

At about 8:45 p.m., he was on the road responding to a motor vehicle accident. He was in his own pickup truck which collided with a Newton County Sheriff's Deputy's vehicle. The pickup overturned and Mickey was ejected from the truck and died of his injuries at the scene of the accident.

The Deputy was not seriously injured.

Mickey is described as a family man with a strong passion and dedication for his work. His passing is a huge loss to the community.

Others describe him as a good guy who will be missed.

Firefighting comrades stated that all his spare time went towards improving the Fire Department.

Mickey was an active member of Sand Springs Baptist Church.

Mickey is survived by many loving friends, comrades and relatives, including his mother, Nancy Yates Thorne; his wife, Karla Yates; his 7 children - Julie Thompson, Tyler Yates, Josh Thompson, Zach Yates, Kaylee Yates, Tyler Green and Brandon Yates; his step brothers Wendell Thorne and Chris Thorne; and his step sister, LeeAnn Henry.
