Mary Greco - A retired Nun murdered in Schenectady, New York

Mary Greco, age 82, died sometime between December 28 and December 31, 2012, at her apartment in Schenectady, New York.

She had been strangled in a robbery attempt. Shortly after her body was found, her car was found a mile away.

Mary was a retired Nun. She was born and raised in Schenectady, entered the missionary community in 1956 with the Daughters of Mary, Health of the Sick, staying with them until the community disbanded in 1972. She then worked for the state until retiring in 1996.

She was a longtime parishioner at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church on State Street.

It is believed that Mary Greco took pity on Michael Briggs when he came door to door asking for work shovelling snow and she hired him to shovel out her car after a snowstorm. Within days, Briggs returned after another storm and either Mary let him into her apartment or he followed her in, where he allegedly robbed and killed her and then stole her car.

Michael Briggs denies all of this. He has previously served a prison sentence for burglary and robbery. Michael Briggs is innocent until proven guilty.

Mary is described by neighbours as a kind, quiet and deeply spiritual woman.

Family members describe her as a very spiritual person who had a huge heart. She often went on international missions of aid for the underprivileged.

Mary is survived by many loving friends and relatives including two sisters and a

brother and sister-in-law.

Pray for justice for Mary Greco. Amen.

What kind of man steals from an old woman and then kills her? What kind of man is this? Only God knows.

God save us from the thieves. They are killing us, Father. Amen.

Pray that Mary Greco is in heaven. Pray that she is at peace and is with God. Amen.

Dear Lord, have mercy on Sr. Mary's soul.
I wish He would explain to us why He permits this to happen.
Is it a warning to all sisters who live alone?
But she had no more community to belong to, did she?
Or did she have a choice to enter another, and chose not to?
Dear Lord, help all Sisters, in community and not.
Help them to make all the right decisions.

Thank you to whoever runs this blog. The photo of her reading to children is appreciated.
