Luke Sheehy - Firefighter - U.S. Forest Service - California

Firefighter Luke Sheehy, age 28, of Susanville, California, died in the line of duty on June 10, 2013.

Luke was a member of the California Smokejumpers, an airborne firefighting unit of the United States Forest Service based in Redding, California. Prior to his career with the United States Forest Service, he served 5 seasons as a firefighter for CAL FIRE.

He and his comrades were fighting a lightning sparked wildland fire in the Modoc National Forest, about 15 miles southeast of the community of Alturas, California.

At about 5 p.m., a limb from a dead tree fell about 60 feet hitting Luke as he walked by. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Alturas where he was pronounced deceased.

The Forest Service is deeply mourning the passing of Luke. He will be forever missed.
Saint Florian, Patron
