William Gilbert - U.S. Military

Spc. William J. Gilbert, age 24, of Hacienda Heights, California, died on May 14, 2013, in Sanjaray, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

He was known as Willie to his family members.

William enlisted in August of 2010 and was on his first combat tour. 

He graduated from La Serna High School in 2007, where he is remembered as a fun-loving student athlete.  He played baseball and football. 

He is described by High School officials as mature beyond his years, well-respected by his peers, with a great sense of humor.  He is also described as determined, a hard worker and a positive man to be around.

Family members said that Willie was proud to join the Army and to serve his country.  He is described as sweet, sensitive, strong and fun.  Everybody loved Willie.

They also stated that he always held his chin up and was looking forward to the birth of his first child in just a few weeks.  

William is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his wife, Monica and his unborn child.
