Tom Decker - Law Enforcement - Minnesota

Police Officer Tom Decker, age 31, died in the line of duty on November 29, 2012, in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

Tom was a member of the Cold Spring Police Department. He had 6 years of service with Cold Spring; and 6 years of service with the Isle Police Department and Kimbal Police Department. 

Tom and his partner were performing a welfare check on a man whose family believed was suicidal. Officers had attempted to make contact with the subject at his apartment but were not successful. They returned to the scene at approximately 11:00 p.m. As Officer Decker exited his patrol car in an alley behind the apartment he was ambushed by the subject and shot twice. He was fatally wounded despite wearing his vest.

The subject was arrested following the incident.

Tom grew up on a farm south of Cold Spring. After graduating from college, Tom entered police work.
Police officials stated that Tom had many letters of commendation and appreciation on his file. He had a sense of humor and was known as the Department Jokester. 

The community is heartbroken by the news of Tom's death. 

Family members stated that Tom loved the outdoors and loved to travel. He was shy and reserved as a youngster but outgoing and gregarious as an adult. 

Tom is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife and 4 children.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
