Juan Mendoza Vargas - soldier struck by a car

Sergeant Juan Mendoza Vargas, age 38, died on November 16, 2012, in Killeen, Texas.

Juan was off duty and at about 11:00 p.m., he was crossing South Fort Hood Street when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 20 year old man. Juan was pronounced deceased about 40 minutes later. 

Juan listed his home town as Las Vegas, Nevada. 

He entered the military in August of 2006 as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist. He had been assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Phantom Command, III Corps, Fort Hood since September of 2012.

Juan had served two one-year long tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Juan's awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver Wheeled Vehicles.

Juan is survived by many loving friends and relatives. 

Pray for all who survive war only to be killed by accident and by misadventure. Amen. 

Pray for all who die before their time. Amen.
