John Echternach Jr. - Firefighter - Virginia

Dr. John Echternach Jr., age 54, died on June 29, 2012, in Roanoke, Virginia.

He was a member of the Boones Mill Volunteer Fire Department in Franklin County, Virginia. 

John was en route to the fire station in response to an outbreak of severe weather in the area when he stopped on the highway to help another driver whose car was hit by a tree. While assisting, John was struck by another falling tree and was severely injured. He succumbed to his injuries several days later.

John worked as an academic coordinator of clinical education at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke and an assistant professor in the physical therapist assistant department.

Before joining the Boones Mill fire department, he served with the Clearbrook volunteer fire department from 1992 to 2003. 

John is described by coworkers as hardworking and dedicated to helping others. He is described as devoting his life to serving others. He died doing what he loved. 

John is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his father, John Sr.; mother, Jeanne; sister Catherine; his wife, Debbie; his son Jeff and his daughter, Jaimie. 

Pray for all who die while coming to the aid of others.
