Ruben Thomas - Corrections Officer - Florida

Sergeant Ruben Thomas, age 24, died on March 18, 2012, in Florida.

Ruben was a member of the Florida Department of Corrections, at the Columbia Correctional Institution. He had 6 years of service. The Institution is located 6 miles east of Lake City, Florida.

At approximately 10:00 pm he was checking on an inmate in one of the prison's dorms when the inmate attacked him. He was stabbed in the neck several times by the inmate who was armed with some sort of shank. The inmate, who was serving a life sentence for murdering a college student, then struck another officer in the eye with a sock filled filled with a heavy item before being taken into custody.

Saint Michael, Archangel,
Patron Saint of the Police

lost their father.
Sergeant Thomas was transported to Shands Lake Shore Hospital where he died.

Corrections Department officials stated that they are mourning the loss of Ruben who is described as a solid and highly respected member of the Agency.

Friends stated that Ruben was a hard-working boy. He did what he had to do to pay the bills. He was the first to forgive anybody for what they did. He was such a good Christian person. He went into work every day with the thought that, God forgives you, and so do I.

Ruben is survived by many loving friends and family members including his fiancee and their young daughter. Another child is expected in August.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Ruben Thomas is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
