Mohammed El Gharaffi

French Legionnaire Chief Warrant Officer Mohammed El Gharaffi, age 39, died on December 29, 2011, in the Tagab Valley of Afghanistan.

He was deliberately shot by an Afghan soldier of the Afghan National Army. The Afghan soldier was also killed. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

He was with the 2nd Foreign Engineering Regiment (2e REG). He lived in Saint Martin-Lalande.

He joined the Foreign Legion in 1992 and had previously served in the former Yugoslavia, Tajikistan, Guyana, Djibouti and Afghanistan.

Military officials describe Mohammed as determined, tough and motivated. 

Mohammed is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife and four children, ages 4 to 13.
