Calvin Matthew Pereda

Spc. Calvin M. Pereda, age 21, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, died on November 12, 2011, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered after encountering an improvised explosive device while on dismounted patrol.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

He was from Guam in the Mariana Islands. His mother moved her five sons to the Fayetteville area in 2000, when Calvin was about 10 years old. He attended South View High School in Hope Mills.

He joined the Army in March of 2010 and graduated from Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He arrived in Alaska in August of 2010.

Family members describe him as respectful and soft-spoken. 

Calvin is survived by numerous loving friends and family members including his mother, Rosario; and brothers - Clifford, Chaz, Jeremy and Jarrett.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Calvin Matthew Pereda is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
