John A. Lyons

Sgt. John A. Lyons, age 26, of Seaside Park, New Jersey, died on October 26, 2011, in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

John Lyons graduated from Rutgers University, where he majored in political science and Latin.

John joined the military in February 2009 as a combat engineer. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan.

His awards and decorations include the NATO Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.

John is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother, Susan Smiley; and a brother and sister. 

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that John A. Lyons is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
