Michael Collins - Firefighter - Iowa

Firefighter Michael Collins, age 41, died on September 18, 2011, on a highway outside of Shelby, Iowa.

Michael was a member of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department, Iowa. He had served with the department for two years.

Michael responded to a call that a woman was hurt in an accident in a construction zone on Interstate 80. While he was directing traffic at the crash scene, another driver came up too fast on the slowing traffic and moved into the other lane, hitting Michael Collins. He died of his injuries at the scene.

Fire Department officials describe Michael as dedicated, reliable and responsible. 

Michael is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife Tanya Lyn Collins; son Mike Collins; daughters Vanity Collins and Jasmine Collins; and Kayla Hatfield; mother and stepfather Pauline and Jack Hammond; brothers, Fred Collins and Al Fenderson.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
