Kevin R. Shumaker

Spc. Kevin R. Shumaker, age 24, of Livermore, California, died on August 31, 2011, in a stateside hospital of a non-combat related illness.

He was assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. 

He was an Army cook and had been in Afghanistan for over a year. Kevin Shumaker joined the Army in February 2009 and served as a cook with the 615th Military Police Company in Afghanistan from May 2010 to May 2011. He returned last month to Fort Drum in upstate New York, home of the Army's 10th Mountain Division. 

This poor kid has died of rabies which is believed to have been contracted during his service overseas. It is not believed that he contracted this disease in New York State. 

Kevin's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NATO Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

Kevin is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother and stepfather.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Kevin R. Shumaker is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
