Joseph L. Szczerba - Law Enforcement - Delaware

Sergeant Joseph L. Szczerba, age 44, was killed in the line of duty on September 16, 2011, in Wilmington Manor, Delaware.

He had 18 years of service with the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware.

Sergeant Szczerba had responded to backup other officers who were searching for a disorderly man. He located the man and after a short foot chase, began to struggle with him. During the struggle the subject pulled out a knife and stabbed Sergeant Szczerba in the neck.

Other officers were able to take the subject into custody. Sergeant Szczerba later died of his wounds.

Police Department officials describe Joseph Szczerba as a good person and a great police officer. 

His high school officials remember him as genuine and nice to everyone. 

Joseph is survived by numerous loving friends and family members including his wife, Kathy; brothers Edward, Peter, Gerald and Stephen and sisters Nancy and Karen.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty. 

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Joseph L. Szczerba is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
