Jonathan was with the Gloucestershire-based 1st Battalion The Rifles. He died from small arms fire by insurgents.
He deployed to Afghanistan in June of 2011. He had joined the Army in 1996 and had previously been deployed to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Military officials describe Jonathan as a professional soldier with the very highest of standards. He is also described as compassionate, with a sense of humour and energetic.
Jonathan McKinlay is survived by many loving friends and family members including his wife, Lisa; and his three children.
Family members describe him as a loving husband and a true friend to others.
Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Jonathan McKinlay is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
