Shawn A. Muhr

Spec. Shawn A. Muhr, age 26, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, was killed on January 29, 2011, in the Helmand province of Afghanistan when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 264th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade at Fort Bragg.  He had returned home on leave just after Christmas and returned to Afghanistan on Jan. 12. He joined the Army six years ago.

Shawn Muhr is being recalled as a top-notch athlete and a warm, generous person who loved serving his country.  He was a 2003 graduate of Coon Rapids-Bayard High School, where he wrestled and played football.

Shawn Muhr joined the Army in 2005 after working for about a year at a Council Bluffs meatpacking plant.  He was a truck driver in a military transportation unit and was on a mission with a convoy of Army trucks when he was killed.

He was big man, standing about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing well over 200 pounds. But he was also known as an easygoing person who enjoyed a good laugh.  He is described as  "a good man, a good friend and a good American."

Shawn Muhr had previously been deployed to South Korea and Iraq and was assigned to Afghanistan in October.

Shawn was married to Winifred Olchawa and had a stepchild, Diven.  Other survivors include his father, of Coon Rapids; his mother, Shirley Muhr of Tennessee; a brother, Aaron of Coon Rapids; and three sisters, Muhr-Burris, Vennessa Warneka of Carroll and Delinda Scheuermann of Mount Carmel.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Shawn Muhr is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
