Lucas T. Pyeatt

Cpl. Lucas T. Pyeatt, age 24, died in Afghanistan on February 5, 2011.  Luke was from Newport News, Virginia. 

Family members stated that "Our son Lucas Todd Pyeatt was lost in action near Kajaki, Helmand Province, Afghanistan on Saturday morning, February 5th, 2011. Luke was a member of the USMC 2nd Radio Battallion, stationed at Camp Lejuene, NC. A proud Marine, Luke loved his family, friends and Marine Brothers and Sisters and would want us to remember all the good times and hard times we had together. God bless you, and please don't forget the sacrifices all these outstanding young women and men are making on behalf of our country."

He fell in love with orchestra music when he began playing the string bass. As a middle school student, he taught himself sign language to communicate with a deaf classmate. But his interests eventually turned to the Marines, a career that brought great personal satisfaction and family pride, but one that ultimately cost his life.

"When I tell you he meant everything to us – I know parents say that all the time, but it's so hard to believe he's not here anymore," said his mother, Cindy. "To say that he left a hole in our family doesn't even touch it. We are so broken inside."  Pyeatt planned to stay in the Marine Corps for five years and had set his sights on being a Navy SEAL, said his sister, Emily Smalley.  Lucas Pyeatt and his family moved to Newport News in 1995. His father is Lon Scott.  Lucas attended Hines Middle School and Woodside High School, where he graduated in 2004. He was an Eagle Scout and a Civil War buff, spending time at Endview Plantation. 

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he began a mission to St. Petersburg, Russia, which was cut short due to health problems. But he continued to serve his church.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Lucas T. Pyeatt is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
