2 Germans dead in Afghanistan

Germany is slow to publish the names of its dead. The Afghan war is not popular in Germany.

A German soldier and a German aid-worker were both killed in Afghanistan last week in separate incidents. If the names of these men or their photos surface, we will publish them here.

German Aid Worker:

A German national injured in an armed attack in northern Afghanistan on Dec. 24, 2010, has died of his wounds in hospital on December 25, 2010. The man, who has not yet been identified but worked for Germany's state-owned development bank, is thought to have been surveying a road project in the area. Two unknown armed motorcyclists shot a German national as he was on his way from Khulm district (Balkh province) to the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. He was taken to a German-run hospital in Mazar city by police. The man had been warned not to travel without security protection. Local Afghani officials said "We had advised him several times not go alone and without bodyguards to the district but he did not pay attention." The German was surveying a 110-kilometre (70-mile) road construction project connecting Khulm district with neighbouring Kunduz province. Officials in Berlin said that the man worked for Germany's state-owned KfW development bank.

German Soldier:

A spokesman for the Bundeswehr Operations Command in Potsdam said the 21-year-old male soldier was found at an outpost north of the Pol-e-Khomri field camp with severe gunshot wounds. He was then brought via helicopter to the camp, where he died during emergency surgery.

Pol-e-Khomri lies south of Kunduz in the far north of Afghanistan, where most of the approximately 4,600 German soldiers are stationed as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

Let us pray that both of these men are with God. God help them.  God help us all.
