Robert Rumfelt - Sheriff's Deputy Fatality - Lake County, California

Deputy Sheriff Robert Rumfelt, age 50, died in the line of duty on August 22, 2017, at a hospital in Lakeport, California.
Robert Rumfelt

Deputy Sheriff Rumfelt was a member of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. He had 3 years of service with the Sheriff's Office and had served for 9 years with the Lakeport Police Department.

He was known as Rob to his family and friends.

At 8:00 p.m. Rob and other law enforcement officers responded to a call that a fight had broken out in a residential area in Lakeport. About four or five people were involved in the turmoil. One of them resisted arrest and had to be tased before being taken into custody.

When Rob drove away from the scene at the conclusion of the incident, he suffered a medical emergency which caused his patrol car to crash. It is believed that Rob had suffered a heart attack in his vehicle.

Rob was rushed to a hospital in Lakeport where, tragically, he passed away.

Rob was a lifelong Lake County resident. He was sworn in as a Lakeport police officer in 1997. In 2006 he left law enforcement to work overseas as a private contractor teaching law enforcement tactics. In 2014 he began working for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. He served as a training officer and firearms instructor. Rob was also an assistant football coach at Clear Lake High School.
Michael, Patron Saint of the
Police, pray for Rob and for
those who have lost him.

The members of the Lake County Sheriff's Office and the members of the Lakeport Police Department are in mourning over the death of their brother. Rob was known as a mentor to young deputies in the Sheriff's Office. He will be forever remembered.

Rob's loved ones are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He was loved. He did his best.  He will be forever mourned.

Rob is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his mother and father, his sister, his wife and two daughters.

Thank you for your service to the community, Rob.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.

Pray for all who go to work and who die because of it.

Pray that Rob is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.

Rob was my classmate at Clear Lake High School, graduating class of 1985. He was always a tough guy, no nonsense, yet funny. That's probably what led him in to being a great Marine and a great police officer. I'm now sorry I did not know him too well after high school...from what I gather he was a good man later in life. I moved out of Lakeport for college and he served in the USMC. Hell - we probably would have been good friends down the road had we kept in touch. My loss.

Funny - the last fist fight I was ever in was with "the then" Robbie Rumfelt in 8th grade (1981) at Terrace Middle School, next to CLHS on the high-jump mats. If scored, he probably got the better of me, but we squared off pretty well. Then - laughed about it later.

I come from a family of past and current Marines and the flag that covered my father's casket is presented proudly in my home. To your family Mr. Rumfelt - you will be missed. Sorry to see you go so soon.

I worked with Rob at Running Creek when he was director of security there, I had a lot of great times with him giving each other a hard time and joking about it. I liked him a lot and will always remember him for the warrior, gentle funny guy that he was. Rest in peace brother
