Darrell Plank - Firefighter Fatality - Georgia

Firefighter Darrell Plank, age 29, died in the line of duty on May 23, 2017, at a hospital in Georgia.

Firefighter Plank was a volunteer member of Macon County Fire Rescue which is based in Montezuma, Georgia. He had over 10 years of service.

At about 4:30 p.m. on May 20, 2017, Darrell and others responded to a residential fire near Oglethorpe. Darrell was putting on his protective gear when other firefighters were establishing a hose line. During that procedure, a metal coupling struck Darrell in the head. He was knocked to the ground.

Darrell was rushed to a local hospital. He had suffered a stroke from the injury. He underwent surgery but, tragically, three days later, Darrell passed away from his injuries.

Darrell was a carpenter by trade. He had volunteered with fire departments in both Macon and Montezuma Counties. He was also a local sports coach. He loved hunting

and fishing and baseball.

Friends describe Darrell as a man who was helpful, soft-spoken and kind in spirit. He gave of himself to others.

A funding site has been set up to help Darrell's family with expenses.

The members of the Macon County Fire Rescue are in mourning over the death of their young brother. Darrell was a well-liked and well-respected member of their team. He was very passionate about everything that he did. He will be forever remembered.

Darrell's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loving and was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Darrell is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and five children.
